Which people are at greater risk?

  • Elderly (people aged 65 years and above) – With age, the immune system weakens, due to which the body is unable to fight infections properly.
  • Young children (especially those under 5 years of age) – The immunity of young children is not yet fully developed, due to which they easily become victims of infections.
  • Pregnant women – Due to changes in the body during pregnancy, hormonal changes and pressure on the immune system, the risk of infection is higher.
  • People with chronic health conditions— People with respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD, people with diabetes, heart conditions like congestive heart failure, and chronic kidney or liver disease—are at higher risk for infection. People   with weakened immunity are also at higher risk.
  • People with obesity – Obesity puts pressure on the respiratory system and can also affect the immune system.

These people should consult a doctor and get the flu vaccine and should immediately consult a doctor if they notice any symptoms of infection.

What are the symptoms of H3N2?

The symptoms of the H3N2 virus are more severe than those of the common cold and begin suddenly.

  • High fever – often above 100°F (38°C).
  • Cough – Usually there is a dry and severe cough.
  • Sore throat – swallowing may be difficult.
  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • Headache and body aches – Severe pain in muscles and joints is a common symptom.
  • Fatigue and weakness – feeling very  tired  and staying so for several days.
  • Sneezing and watery eyes.
  • Vomiting and diarrhea may also occur in some cases, although these are more common in children.
