News Topical, Digital Desk : To alleviate the annual waterlogging problem in the northern part of the city, the Municipal Corporation is preparing to begin work on a major project. Under the Urban Flood Inundation Control and Stormwater Drainage Scheme, the government has approved the construction of a large RCC drain from Gulriha Police Station to Chiluataal in Ward No. 30.
Approximately ₹124 crore will be spent on this ambitious project, which is considered a significant step towards strengthening Gorakhpur's urban infrastructure.
With the government's approval, the financial process has begun. According to an order issued by Under Secretary Sanjay Kumar Tiwari, the first installment of ₹43.33 crore has been released for the project. This paves the way for an early start to construction work.
The proposed drain will be approximately 12.36 kilometers long, starting from the Gulriha police station area and extending to Chiluatal. Its special feature is that it will have a water discharge capacity of 3200 MLD (million liters per day). According to experts, a drain with this capacity will be able to drain water quickly even during heavy rains, significantly eliminating the problem of waterlogging.
The project will most benefit the approximately 40,000 people living in areas like Gulriha, Mirzapur, Puraina, and Bajraha. Waterlogging remains a major problem in these areas during the rainy season, causing significant difficulties in transportation, health, and daily life.
According to the Municipal Corporation's plan, all the surrounding smaller drains and sewers will be connected to this main drain, ensuring a unified drainage system for the entire area. Furthermore, the drain will be connected to the drainage systems of important projects such as the Gorakhpur Development Authority's (GDA) Rapti Township and Sports City, ensuring better water management in light of future population growth and urban expansion. The project has been scientifically designed to accommodate future needs and potential water flow.
