News Topical, Digital Desk : Goa's Information Technology Minister Rohan Khaunte on Monday said his government is considering the possibility of restricting internet media usage for children below 16 years of age in the state.
They cited growing concerns about digital addiction, cyberbullying and online safety risks.
He said the state plans to set up a working committee comprising representatives from educationists, parent-teacher associations, industry and the government to study the issue and suggest a policy framework.
Need to seriously consider
Citing global examples like Australia banning internet media for children below 16 years of age, Khaunte said the issue needs serious deliberation in India and should be dealt with in a systematic and consultative manner.
He said that the age of 16 is a very critical period when children should focus on learning and holistic development, but the increasing cases of digital addiction, exposure to age-inappropriate content, anxiety, depression and misuse of personal data have raised alarm bells.
Don't make any hasty decisions
The minister said any decision must be in accordance with central laws, including the provisions of the Information Technology Act. "Our aim is not to make any hasty decisions, but to examine how we can protect children under 16 from the dangers of internet media, while also promoting the creative and educational use of digital devices.
