News Topical, Digital Desk : The US Army has placed Andrew Hug, a senior officer in its nuclear and chemical safety department, on administrative leave after an undercover video surfaced of him allegedly sharing sensitive information with a stranger.
The video, reportedly recorded at a public restaurant, shows Hughes discussing key issues related to US military operations and nuclear policy. Activist James O'Keefe shared the video on social media platforms, claiming that Hughes revealed sensitive national security information, though these claims have not been independently verified.
The army has launched an investigation
US Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said in a statement that Hug has been placed on leave while the matter is thoroughly investigated. Some reports also said he was removed from the Pentagon after the video surfaced, but this could not be confirmed.
In the video, Hug identifies himself as an officer responsible for the security of nuclear and chemical weapons. He says his job is to ensure that those with access to these weapons are trustworthy. He also mentions that the military ensures that mentally unstable individuals do not have access to these weapons.
Many controversial claims in the video
In the video, Hug also claimed that the United States still possesses dangerous chemicals such as nerve agents and that such substances are stored in Maryland. He cited an incident where a lab chemist was exposed to such chemicals because she was not wearing protective equipment.
Furthermore, he stated that the US military could target Iran's top leadership if it does not change its stance. He also reportedly acknowledged that civilians, even children, were killed in attacks on Iran, which he described as "collateral damage." Hug also provided information about the US missile detection system, explaining that launches are detected using satellites and radar.
Launch systems and procedures also discussed
He also explained how launch messages are handled during wartime. According to him, military personnel are trained to accept orders received through any medium if all necessary checks are met.
