News Topical, Digital Desk : Former US police officer Gaya Grayson has been found guilty of murdering a white woman. Grayson was accused of fatally shooting Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old mother of two, in July 2024. The crime drew national attention and sparked calls for police reform.
In fact, 31-year-old white former Illinois sheriff's deputy, Sean Grayson, was found guilty of murder by a jury after two days of deliberation. Grayson was found guilty of second-degree murder. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Massey's family, expressed disappointment that Grayson was not convicted of first-degree murder. However, he said the verdict still represents justice for Sonya Massey.
Ben Kremp, a lawyer representing Sonya Massey's family, said accountability has begun and we now hope the court will impose a meaningful sentence that reflects the gravity of these crimes and the lives lost.
Could be imprisoned for 20 years
He expressed disappointment at being charged with second-degree murder, saying first-degree murder carries a life sentence, while second-degree murder carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
Full details of the incident
Massey, who had previously received treatment for mental health issues, called the 911 emergency line to report a possible intruder in her home. Two Sangamon County sheriff's deputies arrived shortly after midnight. Police body camera footage showed Massey speaking to officers and having her purse searched after they asked for identification.
Grayson then asked her to check the pot of boiling water on the stove, saying, "We don't need a fire while we're here." When Grayson returned to the living room, Macy asked him why, and he laughed and replied: "Away from your hot steaming water."
Massey, holding the pot, replied, "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus Christ" - causing the deputy to draw his weapon and say: "You better not do that. I swear to God I'll shoot you in the face."
As Massey ducked behind a counter, apologizing, the officer yelled, "Fuck this marijuana!" and fired three shots, hitting Massey in the face and killing him.
