News Topical, Digital Desk : Health officials at the US Food and Drug Administration have issued a warning about 29 supplements due to the risk of them containing toxic ingredients. These supplements were being sold as containing Tejocote Root or Brazil Seed, which are commonly used for weight loss and antioxidants. But investigation revealed that these products actually contained a poisonous plant called Yellow Oleander. This plant is found in Mexico and Central America and is considered extremely dangerous for health.

What harm does it cause?

According to the FDA, consuming yellow oleander can have serious effects on the body. It can cause heart, brain, and digestive problems. In some cases, cardiac arrest, abdominal pain, confusion, and other serious symptoms can occur, which can prove fatal. These supplements were being sold on online platforms like Amazon, eBay, and Etsy, as well as on numerous websites. The FDA has now advised people to immediately stop using these products and dispose of them safely.

Some companies have decided to recall their products.

Some companies have decided to recall their products, while others could not be reached or have refused to recall them. The FDA also recommends that anyone who has taken these supplements should immediately consult a doctor, even if they are asymptomatic. If anyone experiences serious side effects, seek emergency medical help immediately. The investigation into this matter began in 2023, when a CDC report found that some products marketed as tejocote root contained yellow oleander. The FDA suspects that there may be many other products on the market, sold under different names, that contain the same toxic ingredient.

In fact, yellow oleander is used because its toxic compounds suppress appetite and cause symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea, leading to rapid weight loss. However, this practice is extremely dangerous and can pose serious health risks. These supplements are also difficult to identify, as yellow oleander seeds resemble some natural products like candlenuts. This is why people often consume them without knowing it.
