News Topical, Digital Desk : After the hustle and bustle of the day, night is the time for rest and peaceful sleep. People do different things to sleep peacefully at night. For some, a comfortable mattress or pillow is necessary to sleep peacefully, while others get good sleep only in a comfortable position. However, there are some people who cannot sleep without covering themselves.

Be it summer or winter, these people are not affected by the weather. What matters is whether they are covered while sleeping or not. In such a situation, the question arises that what is the reason that people are not able to sleep without covering themselves even in extreme heat. If you are also among these people and this question often arises in your mind, then today in this article we are going to answer this question. Let us know in detail.

Childhood habits don't go away

This habit of covering oneself with a blanket or sheet while sleeping is related to our childhood. Actually, covering oneself with a blanket or sheet is an important part of the circadian rhythm. This helps us to decide when our body is ready to sleep and when to wake up. This is such a habit that develops from birth and hence it remains the same even when we grow up.

Blanket provides a feeling of security

There is a psychosocial reason behind this habit of sleeping covered. Actually, the warmth and comfort of the blanket makes us feel safe at night. It is common to feel scared of darkness while sleeping and hence some people use blankets to avoid this fear. Even when we grow up, this fear remains the same and our mind feels safe under the blanket.

protection from the cold

When we sleep, our  body temperature  drops, which continues to fall throughout the night. It reaches its lowest level around 4 am. This process starts an hour before we go to bed and when we enter the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep cycle, our body loses the ability to control its temperature. In such a situation, blankets or sheets help keep us warm throughout the night and protect us from the cold.

Blanket and insomnia also have a connection

A study published in 2015 in the Journal of Sleep Medicine and Disorders showed that sleeping under a weighted blanket  improved sleep at night  . Another study published in 2020 in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy showed that weighted blankets may also be helpful for people suffering from anxiety and insomnia.
