News Topical, Digital Desk : According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), an electoral reforms NGO, about 32 per cent of the current Rajya Sabha MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves, while 14 per cent of them are billionaires.
The report is based on an analysis of the affidavits of 229 of the 233 Rajya Sabha members. One seat from Jharkhand is currently vacant, while affidavits for three MPs were not available. The analysis also includes 37 recently elected members.
Of the 229 MPs whose documents were analyzed, 73 (32 percent) declared criminal cases. Of these, 36 (16 percent) faced serious charges. One MP reported a murder case, four reported attempted murder cases, and three reported cases related to crimes against women.
Twenty-seven of the BJP's 99 MPs, 12 of the Congress 's 28, four of the Trinamool Congress's 13, and four of the Aam Aadmi Party's 10 MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Three MPs each from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have also disclosed criminal cases.
The report also found that 31 MPs (14 percent) have total assets in the billions. Among major parties, six MPs from the BJP, five from the Congress, four from the YSR Congress Party, two each from the Aam Aadmi Party and the BSP, and three from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) declared assets worth more than ₹1 billion.
The average assets of a Rajya Sabha member are estimated at ₹120.69 crore. The BJP has average assets of ₹28.29 crore per MP, compared to ₹128.61 crore for the Congress, ₹17.70 crore for the Trinamool Congress, and ₹574.09 crore for the Aam Aadmi Party. Other parties include the YSRCP (₹522.63 crore), the Samajwadi Party (₹399.71 crore), the Biju Janata Dal (₹105.63 crore), and the DMK (₹11.90 crore).
BRS MP Bandi Partha Sarathi has declared the highest assets worth around ₹5,300 crore, followed by Aam Aadmi Party's Rajendra Gupta (₹5,053 crore) and YSRCP's Ayodhya Rami Reddy Ala (₹2,577 crore).
Aam Aadmi Party MP Sant Balbir Singh has the lowest assets, with approximately ₹3 lakh (approximately ₹3 lakh). He is followed by Maharaja Sajoba Leishemba of Manipur (approximately ₹5 lakh) and Prakash Chik Baraik of the Trinamool Congress (approximately ₹9 lakh).
