In 1987-88, Mahabharata was telecasted for the first time on India's Doordarshan TV channel. The situation was such that people used to sit in front of the television in their homes to watch this show which came in the afternoon. Mahabharata was watched in every corner of every house of the country.

As long as it was being telecast, people would not move from the TV. Just like there was a craze for Mahabharata in the country, the same craze was seen for this show in Britain as well. Based on the report of IMDB, BR Chopra's Mahabharata was telecasted on BBC channel in Britain 36 years ago.

The special thing was that at that time the viewership of this serial in Britain was around 5 million (50 lakhs), which was a big deal for any Indian show. This figure of viewership of any Indian serial on a foreign TV channel is still considered a record.
