News Topical, Digital Desk : All eight people on board a military helicopter crashed in Ghana, including Ghana's defense and environment ministers, killing them. Ghana's military said the helicopter took off from the capital, Accra, on Wednesday morning and was headed to Obuasi, a troubled northwest region.
The helicopter suddenly disappeared from the radar
Meanwhile, it suddenly disappeared from the radar. Later, its debris was found in the Adansi area. The cause of the accident is not yet known. The army has said that the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
The Ghana government has called the accident a national tragedy
Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, along with the vice-president of the ruling National Democratic Congress, the national security adviser and crew members were also killed. Mourners have arrived at Boamah's residence as well as the party headquarters. The Ghanaian government has described the accident as a national tragedy.
This is a critical time for Ghana
Boamah was leading Ghana’s defence ministry at a time when jihadist activity was growing along its northern border in Burkina Faso.
Although Ghana has so far prevented jihadist infiltration from the Sahel, unlike neighbouring Togo and Benin - observers have warned of a rise in arms smuggling and of militants from Burkina Faso crossing the porous border to use Ghana as a rear base.
