
News Topical, Digital Desk : Bangladesh's renowned economist Abul Barkat was arrested late Thursday night on charges of fraud of 297 crore taka (about Rs 210 crore). He was the chairman of the country's largest government bank Janata Bank during the rule of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Many Bangladeshis expressed concern over Abul's arrest and said that the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus is taking such action as a political vendetta. Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Nasirul Islam said, ‘We have arrested Abul Barkat as an accused in the ACC (Anti-Corruption Commission) case.’
Case registered against 30 people
According to local media, a case has been registered against 30 people including Abul Barkat in connection with the embezzlement of crores of taka through loan fraud by a company called Anontex during the rule of the Awami League. The case was registered by the ACC on February 20. Abul's daughter Aruni said on Friday that 20-25 people entered the house last night and took my father from the bedroom. They did not even show any warrant.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina's Awami League alleged that former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun agreed to become a government witness under torture and pressure. The country's International Criminal Court on Thursday framed charges against Hasina, Mamun and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for crimes against humanity.
