News Topical, Digital Desk : A strong earthquake of 5.8 magnitude hit parts of Northeast and West Bengal on Sunday evening. After this, three more tremors were felt within one and a half hours. During this, two girls were injured in Assam and many houses were damaged. Officials said that the first tremor came at 4:41 pm, whose magnitude was 5.8. 

The epicenter of the earthquake was in this district of Assam

He said the second tremor was recorded at 4:58 pm with a magnitude of 3.1, the third at 5:21 pm with a magnitude of 2.9 and the fourth at 6:11 pm with a magnitude of 2.7. According to officials, the epicentre of the third tremor was in Assam's Sonitpur and the other three were in Udalguri district. 

2 girls injured due to roof collapse

The Assam State Disaster Management (ASDMA) said that two girls were injured when the roof of a hostel collapsed due to the earthquake in Udalguri. Several houses were damaged in different parts of the state. ASDMA said that the roof of a house collapsed in Amguri area, while two houses and a shop were partially damaged in Sonitpur. Due to the earthquake, cracks appeared on the walls of some houses in Vishwanath district. At the same time, cracks in houses were also reported from Darang, Nalbari and Hojai districts. 

PM Modi spoke to Assam CM regarding earthquake

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a two-day visit to the Northeast region. He reached Kolkata from Assam in the evening. He spoke to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma and inquired about the earthquake. The Prime Minister assured all possible help from the Center. 

Helpline numbers issued

CM Sharma said that the situation is under control. Disaster management teams are assessing the damage on the spot. The state government has issued helpline numbers to help the affected people. Earthquake tremors were also felt in western parts of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. 

People came out of their homes and shops

In Arunachal Pradesh's capital Itanagar, people rushed out of their homes and shops in panic. State Disaster Management Secretary Dani Sulu said, "There is no report of loss of life or property. The situation is being monitored and there is no need to panic." 

People blew conch shells

Tremors were also felt in parts of North Bengal bordering Assam. Siliguri resident Bikash Dey said, "The ground shook for a few seconds. I came out of the house as a precaution." Some people also blew conches. It is believed that this practice is adopted to reduce the impact of earthquakes. An official said that there is no report of loss of life or property anywhere in the state.
