The nine days of Navratri are celebrated with great devotion and reverence, during which devotees worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Each day, a different form of the Goddess is worshipped, praying for happiness, prosperity, health, and safety in their lives.

Navapatrika Puja is celebrated on the seventh day of Navratri, i.e. Saptami Tithi. This festival is celebrated with great pomp and show, especially in states like Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Manipur, and Assam. It is also known there as Nabapatrika Puja and Kalabau Puja.

What is Navpatrika Puja?

On Navpatrika Puja, devotees worship both Lord Ganesha and Goddess Durga, purifying their homes to welcome the Goddess. During Navpatrika Puja, leaves from banana, raw turmeric, pomegranate, Ashoka, Manka, paddy, Bilva, and barley plants are tied together and worshipped. These nine plants symbolize the nine forms of the Mother Goddess. The plants are bathed, decorated, and worshipped with flowers, lamps, and unbroken rice grains.

This festival is not only a religious ritual, but also a means of bringing happiness, peace, prosperity, and positive energy to the family. This year, Navpatrika Puja will be celebrated on the seventh day of the lunar month, September 29th.

  • Turmeric leaves – Symbol of auspiciousness, prosperity and health.
  • Jayanti Patra – Symbol of good luck and wish fulfillment.
  • Bel Patra – Symbol of peace and strength.
  • Pomegranate leaf – Symbol of knowledge, love and beauty.
  • Ashoka leaf – symbol of purity, truth and victory.
  • Paddy leaves – Symbol of prosperity and nourishment.
  • Barley leaf – Symbol of hope, joy, beauty and energy.

Local tradition and festive color

In states like Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Manipur, and Assam, Navpatrika Puja is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm. Homes and temples are decorated, and Goddess Durga is welcomed with hymns, kirtans, and aartis.

According to local customs, a puja is held, where the Nava Patrika is bathed and decorated, and offered lamps, flowers, and unbroken rice grains. This festival is not only an occasion for devotion, but also brings a message of joy, unity, and positive energy to society and families.
