News Topical, Digital Desk : Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding the Wikipedia article on the Gaza massacre, raising concerns that the page violates the free online encyclopedia's core principle of neutrality. Wales said the article's accusation of taking sides in the controversy is consistent with long-standing criticism from Elon Musk, who has often claimed the platform has a political bias.
What did Wells argue?
Wales cited this page as a particularly serious example of a neutrality issue. His concern centered on the article's lead paragraph, which currently stated, “The Gaza genocide is the continued, deliberate, and systematic destruction of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip by Israel during the Gaza War.”
Wales argued that this terminology is a clear violation of Wikipedia's core policy, which requires neutrality and accountability for disputed claims. He said, "Right now, the main article and overall presentation echo Wikipedia's voice in stating that Israel is committing genocide, even though this claim is highly disputed."
He further stated, "This policy is non-negotiable, and the principles on which it is based cannot be superseded by other policies or guidelines, or by consensus among editors." He revealed that he had been asked about the article in a high-profile media interview and had responded that it "does not meet our high standards and requires immediate attention."
Elon Musk criticized
This comes at a time when popular figures like Tesla CEO Elon Musk have publicly criticized Wikipedia, accusing it of left-wing and ideological bias. Last year, Musk said the platform was "controlled by far-left activists" and called on the public to stop donating.
