News Topical, Digital Desk : According to the Hindu calendar, the festivals of Vijayadashami and Dussehra are celebrated on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Ashwin. Both festivals convey the message of the victory of righteousness over unrighteousness. If you also consider Vijayadashami and Dussehra to be the same, today we are going to tell you the difference between these two festivals.
Why is Dussehra celebrated?
The festival of Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Ashwin. This is the day when Lord Rama killed Ravana and established Dharma over Adharma. Every year, fairs are held across the country on this day, where effigies of Ravana are made and burned, a ritual known as Ravana Dahan.
On this day, people pledge to burn the evil within themselves, like Ravana. This festival also signifies that no matter how powerful evil may be, it can never be defeated by good.
Significance of Vijayadashami
Vijayadashami is celebrated every year on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Ashwin. This day commemorates Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura. This festival also marks the end of Sharadiya Navratri. According to the story recounted in the Markandeya Purana, Goddess Durga fought with Mahishasura from Ashwin Shukla Pratipada to Dashami.
After a nine-day battle, Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura on the tenth day. Therefore, the tenth day of Navratri is celebrated as Vijayadashami. The idol of Goddess Durga is immersed on this day. In many places, the worship of weapons is also practiced on Vijayadashami.
