News Topical, Digital Desk : Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Begum Bushra Bibi, have been in prison for a long time. Imran Khan's wife, Bushra Khan, is being held in conditions that pose a serious threat to her physical and mental health.

The United Nations expressed serious concern over Bushra Bibi's health and urged authorities to take immediate action to address the situation.

In fact, a press release issued by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCR) reprimanded the Pakistani government and urged it to improve conditions. They stated that the state has an obligation to protect Bushra Bibi Khan's health and ensure detention conditions consistent with human dignity.

A room full of insects

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health and Human Resources (OHCHR), Bushra Bibi Khan is currently being held in a small, airless cell in Adiala Jail, which is reportedly filthy, overheated, and infested with insects and rats. Power cuts often leave the cell in darkness. She is reportedly being fed contaminated drinking water and inedible food laced with excessive chili powder.

Due to this, she has lost about 15 kg of weight. It is alleged that Bushra Bibi Khan has been kept in such conditions that she suffers from frequent infections, fainting spells and medical complications like tooth abscess and stomach ulcer have remained untreated.

Risk of health problems

Such conditions fall far below minimum international standards. No detainee should be exposed to extreme heat, contaminated food or water, or conditions that could exacerbate pre-existing health problems.

"Such conditions fall far below minimum international standards. No detainee should be exposed to extreme heat, contaminated food or water, or conditions that could exacerbate pre-existing health problems," said Alice Jill Edwards, the UN's special rapporteur on torture.
