Dimple Yadav, the wife of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and the Samajwadi Party (SP) MP from Mainpuri, has now reacted to the incident.
SP MP Dimple Yadav said, "Crimes against women are constantly increasing across the country. A system should be established where the strictest possible action is taken. Work should be done from a national perspective on how to create an environment for women." She alleged that the Election Commission is influencing the elections. "There will be no free and fair elections in Bihar," she said. "That is why the Election Commission has initiated the SIR."
So far, 5 people have been arrested in the gang rape case.
Police have so far arrested five people in connection with the gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student in Durgapur. The victim filed a complaint with police on Friday, stating that she was raped by several men outside the institute's campus in Durgapur. According to police, the incident occurred when the second-year student was out for dinner with a friend.
Uproar over CM Mamata Banerjee's statement on the incident
Regarding the Durgapur gang rape case, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "How was the victim of the Durgapur Medical College gang rape case out at 12:30 in the night?" Banerjee also said that she was shocked by the incident, but that private medical colleges should take care of their students, especially girls, and not allow them to go out at night. She also said that female students must take care of their own safety.
Called CM Banerjee's statement insensitive
Meanwhile, several leaders have expressed displeasure over CM Banerjee's statement. Calling her statement insensitive, they said that her claim conflicts with the victim's police complaint and statements from her friends and family, which indicate that the incident occurred well before midnight.
