News Topical, Digital Desk : Good food is important not only for the body but also for the mind. A new research related to this has come to light, which shows that copper-rich food can help in keeping the brain healthy. This research has been published in 'Nature Scientific Reports'. In this study, it was found that Americans who were consuming more copper-rich food were more successful in understanding and identifying memory-related problems.

Scientists said that people who eat more copper-rich foods such as seafood, dark chocolate and nuts performed well in tests related to dementia (memory loss in old age). Lead researcher Eef Hogervorst said that the research also observed that along with copper, other nutrients like zinc, iron and selenium were also present in abundance in the food of these people.

Many such researches have been done before

Earlier, some research had revealed that people who had less copper in their diet had a reduced ability to think and remember over time. In another research, when scientists measured the amount of copper in brain tissues, they found that those who had more copper in their brain had less harmful things related to Alzheimer's (such as amyloid stripes) and had better brain health.

How does copper help the brain?

According to scientists, copper acts as an antioxidant that protects brain cells from damage. It helps in making neurotransmitters (chemicals that send messages in the brain) and also provides energy to the brain. Copper deficiency is not very common, but when it occurs, its effects are clearly visible.

Pay attention to these symptoms

If a person feels tired frequently, remains weak and his anemia is not cured even after taking iron or vitamin B12, then it may be due to copper deficiency. Its other symptoms include getting sick frequently, weakening of bones and weakness of nerves over time.

What should we eat?

Scientists have said that caution is necessary before taking copper supplements, because the body needs a balance of all minerals. Taking too much iron or zinc can reduce the amount of copper in the body. Taking too much copper or iron can damage the brain. Copper is naturally found in beef, seafood, nuts, seeds, mushrooms, whole grains and dark chocolate. It is also added to some cereals. According to researchers, about 1.22 to 1.65 milligrams of copper daily is beneficial for the brain.
