News Topical, Digital Desk : The city police station in Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh, has filed an FIR against 12 medical store operators and two others (a father and son) allegedly involved in the illegal trade of codeine syrup. Superintendent of Police Dr. Kaustubh has formed a Special Task Force (SIT) to investigate the matter.
SP City Ayush Srivastava said that on the complaint of drug inspector Rajat Kumar Pandey, the Kotwali police have registered an FIR against 12 medical store owners and Varanasi resident gang leader Shubham Jaiswal and his father Bhola Prasad under sections of fraud, criminal conspiracy etc.
He said that the investigation by the Drug Department has revealed that 37 lakh bottles of cough syrup worth Rs 57 crore were traded from more than 12 medical stores.
Consumption shown in other states and supply in UP
This codeine-containing cough syrup was illegally supplied through forged documents. While the supplies were shown on paper from Jaunpur to Varanasi, Azamgarh, Ghazipur, and Pratapgarh, the actual consumption was in areas like Bihar, Ranchi, and West Bengal.
The most shocking thing is that all 37 lakh bottles were ordered from Ranchi's M/s Shaili Traders Company and were consumed in many districts through fake bills.
The entire game was exposed when an illegal truck was caught in Ghaziabad.
He said that the illegal sale of codeine-containing syrup came to light when an illegal truck carrying the syrup was seized in Ghaziabad recently. The truck was linked to Jaunpur via Varanasi, so the Food Safety and Drug Administration launched a campaign from November 12th to 19th.
During the campaign, the layers of this illegal trade were exposed. The investigation revealed that these 12 medical store owners in Jaunpur had colluded to embezzle millions of rupees by fraudulently purchasing and selling cough syrup on paper.
These drugs were sold at exorbitant prices in the illegal drug market. The names of Shubham Jaiswal of Varanasi and his father, Bhola Jaiswal, have emerged as suspects in this racket, and have been charged by the Jaunpur police.
SIT begins investigation
SP City Srivastava stated that all the accused in this case will be arrested. Rajat Kumar Pandey, who conducted a thorough investigation and uncovered the irregularities, stated that the Superintendent of Police of Jaunpur has formed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of the Superintendent of Police (City), which will investigate the matter, identify and arrest those involved.
