News Topical, Digital Desk : A day after losing a seat to the BJP in the Rajya Sabha elections, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday (October 25) said the National Conference (NC) had tried its best to win all four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir but the final result of 3-1 shows both success and disappointment at the end of the polling.
Speaking to the media, Omar Abdullah said that there should be no doubt about the 3-1 result because we had made every possible effort to win 4-0, but unfortunately some people betrayed us in the last stage of voting.
CM Abdullah said, "It is now quite clear who supported us and who did not, although I do not think it is right to name anyone here. It is indeed sad, but I am grateful to all those who stood with us till the end. As for those who withdrew their support at the last moment, it is disappointing."
'Not a single vote was cross-voted'
However, CM Omar confidently stated that not a single NC vote was cross-voted or spoiled, and that it would be inappropriate to name the MLAs who voted against the alliance and in favor of the BJP. He said, "I am satisfied that not a single NC vote was diverted."
NC won 3 out of 4 seats
This came after allegations that some of the seven MLAs either voted for the BJP or 'deliberately' spoiled their votes during the Rajya Sabha elections, in which the National Conference won three of the four seats, while the BJP managed to win only one seat despite the support of its 28 members.
BJP's Satpal Sharma won the fourth Rajya Sabha seat by securing 32 votes, while Congress, PDP, CPIM, Awami Ittehad Party, Aam Aadmi Party and six independents had pledged support to the 41 NC members.
NC candidate stuck at 21 votes
During the counting, election officials declared three votes invalid, while four members cross-voted for the BJP for the fourth seat, leaving NC's Imran Nabi Dar at 21 votes. The margin of victory for the two seats in the third notification was set at 28.2, meaning the winner needed 29 votes to cross the line. While the NC was promised 59 votes, this defeat has left many questions unanswered.
