Symptoms of Chikungunya

  • Severe joint pain: Pain occurs in the joints of the hands, feet, knees, and waist, which can last for several weeks or months.
  • Headache and muscle pain - Body ache and fatigue are felt .
  • Skin rashes – There may be rashes or itching on the body.
  • Nausea and vomiting – In some cases stomach related problems may also occur .

Like dengue, chikungunya can also cause low platelet counts, but it is not life-threatening. However, it can be serious in the elderly and people with weakened immunity.

 

How is chikungunya spread?

The Chikungunya virus spreads through mosquitoes. When a carrier mosquito bites a healthy person, the virus enters his body. This disease does not spread directly from one person to another. Therefore, to avoid this disease, it is important to protect yourself from mosquitoes.

 

Chikungunya Prevention Tips

To avoid chikungunya, protection from mosquitoes is most important.

Prevent mosquito breeding

  • Do not allow water to accumulate around the house (pots, tyres, old utensils etc.).
  • Change the water in coolers and tanks regularly.
  • Spray insecticides to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

Protect yourself from mosquitoes

  • Wear full-sleeved clothes and use mosquito nets.
  • Use mosquito repellent cream or spray.
  • Take special care during the day, because Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day.

  • Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water.
  • Eat fruits rich in vitamin C (lemon, orange, amla).
