Who is a true friend

1. Eager addictions, hunger and fear of enemies.
Rajdwara crematorium c yattishtati sa bandhavah ॥

In this verse, Acharya Chanakya states that a true friend and relative is the one who supports you when you are sick, when you are surrounded by enemies, when you assist in government affairs, and when you die. Meaning, the one who supports you in every situation is your true friend.

It is better to leave such a friend.

2. Parokshe Karyahantaram Pratyaksha Priyavadinam.
वर्जयेत्तदर्शं मित्रं विषकुम्भं पैमूखम्॥

The meaning of this verse is that a friend who spoils your affairs behind your back while speaking kindly to your face is like a pitcher full of poison with milk placed over its mouth. It is best to abandon such a friend, otherwise you may suffer great losses in the future.

3. Neither Vishwasetkumitra nor Vishwaset.
Kadhayakkupitam mitram sarvam guhyam prakasayet ॥

Acharya Chanakya says in this verse that one should never trust a bad friend. No matter how close the person is to you, one should never trust a friend too much and share your secrets with them. Because if the friendship ever turns sour, they may reveal your secrets to everyone.
