In such a situation, caution is needed, as bird flu can also spread to humans. Let's learn about its symptoms and what you can do to prevent it. 

How does bird flu spread?

Bird flu is caused by influenza A viruses, specifically H5N1. It primarily affects birds, but can also spread to humans due to some causes.

  • Direct contact – By coming in direct contact with infected birds or their saliva or droppings.
  • Contaminated environment – ​​coming into contact with bird cages, soil or water where infected birds have been.
  • Uncleanliness – handling poultry or eggs without proper sanitation.

Symptoms of bird flu in humans

If someone contracts the virus, symptoms may appear within 2 to 8 days of exposure. These symptoms can range from mild to severe.

  • Redness of the eyes 
  • High fever and fatigue
  • Cough, sore throat, and runny nose
  • muscle pain and shortness of breath
  • nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

How to keep yourself safe?

  • Use protective gear – If you come in contact with birds, always use gloves, mask and goggles.
  • Hand hygiene – Wash your hands thoroughly with soap after handling birds or their habitat.
  • Remove your shoes outside the house – If you have visited a place where poultry is reared or wild birds live, remove your shoes outside the house so that the infection does not spread inside the house.
  • Avoid sick animals: Never approach or touch sick or dead birds. If you notice any signs of infection, consult a doctor immediately.
  • Food safety: Avoid drinking raw or unpasteurized milk. Also, eat poultry products only after thoroughly cooking them.
  • Flu vaccine – Although the seasonal flu vaccine doesn't protect against bird flu directly, it can protect you from becoming seriously ill and the risk of double infection.
