News Topical, Digital Desk : Electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh are in for a major shock in February. According to reports, consumers will have to pay a 10 percent higher bill for electricity used in January. Power companies will charge an additional ₹616.05 crore (approximately $6.16 billion) in fuel surcharges.
This decision by the power companies clearly indicates that consumers may have to pay higher bills this February. However, the State Electricity Consumers Council has expressed displeasure over this decision. Council President Awadhesh Kumar Verma has demanded a ban on this surcharge.
Electricity Consumer Council protested
Speaking to ABP News, President of Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumer Council, Awadhesh Kumar Verma said that we have submitted a proposal to the Electricity Regulatory Commission against the 10 percent fuel surcharge that is being collected from consumers in the month of February, because we believe that the order of the Power Corporation is unconstitutional.
Awadhesh Kumar said that the main reason for opposing this is that in November the Regulatory Commission had fixed the maximum cost of purchasing electricity in the tariff at around Rs 4.94, but now they say that in November they purchased electricity at Rs 5.79 per unit, which no one is able to understand.
Questions raised on the purchase of expensive electricity
He said that it is beyond comprehension that during the summer months of April and May, when electricity consumption is highest, electricity was purchased at 4.76 per unit. So what happened in November that led to such high prices? The regulatory commission should put a stop to this and investigate the entire process.
Avdhesh Verma said that the Power Corporation is trying to unconstitutionally burden the people of the state. However, Uttar Pradesh is the first state in the country where the public has a surplus of 50,000 rupees on the power companies, so this should not be implemented.
