News Topical, Digital Desk : In tests conducted by a network of laboratories under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), pathogens were detected in 11.1 percent of the 4.5 lakh patients. The study was part of efforts to identify viral infections of public health importance. The top five pathogens detected include influenza A in acute respiratory infection (ARI)/severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases, dengue virus in cases of high fever, hepatitis A in cases of jaundice, norovirus in outbreaks of acute diarrhoeal disease (ADD) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) in cases of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES).

11.5 percent of germs detected from April to June 2025

According to a report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the prevalence of infectious diseases increased from 10.7 percent in the first quarter of 2025 to 11.5 percent in the second quarter. According to the ICMR's Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) network, pathogens were detected in 24,502 (10.7 percent) of the 228,856 samples tested between January and March. Meanwhile, from April to June 2025, pathogens were detected in 26,055 (11.5 percent) of the 226,095 samples tested.

The infection rate increased by 0.8 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Thus, the infection rate increased by 0.8 percent compared to the previous quarter, indicating the need for closer monitoring of the spread of the infection. According to a senior scientist, while this increase may not seem significant, it should not be underestimated, as it could serve as a warning for seasonal diseases and emerging infections.

More than 40 lakh samples tested

He said, "If we continue to monitor quarterly changes in infection rates, future epidemics can be prevented in time." The VRDL network serves as an early warning system for the country in terms of infectious diseases. Over 4 million samples were tested from 2014-2024, of which pathogens were identified in 18.8 percent.
