News Topical, Digital Desk : Nowadays, the name of Intermittent Fasting is heard a lot in the world of fitness. Many people adopt it as a way to lose weight, control blood sugar or detox the body, but a recent study has brought out surprising results about this popular diet trend.
What is intermittent fasting?
Intermittent fasting means eating for a set period of time during the day and fasting completely the rest of the time. Some people eat for 12 hours and fast for 12 hours, while others choose a 10-hour "eating window". The most talked about pattern is the 16:8 pattern, in which people fast for 16 hours and eat only within 8 hours.
Study claims
According to recent research published in the journal Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome, people who eat for less than 8 hours a day have a 135 percent higher risk of death from heart disease. This means that people who fast for 16 hours continuously may be twice as likely to die from diseases like heart attack or stroke.
These results are based on data from a survey (US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) conducted on about 19,000 American adults.
Does it only affect heart disease?
The study found no significant effect of intermittent fasting on death from cancer or other causes, but a consistent increase in the risk of heart and artery diseases was seen even when people were divided into different groups according to race, economic status or lifestyle.
Advantages and disadvantages of intermittent fasting
Research so far has shown that intermittent fasting:
- May reduce weight
- Helps in controlling blood pressure
- Inflammation may decrease
- Sugar and cholesterol levels may improve
But on the other hand, following this for a long time:
- Nutritional Deficiency
- irritability and headache
- Excessive hunger and fatigue
- Problems like not being able to follow the diet for a long time have also come to light.
Researchers warn
Victor Wenze Zhong, the lead author of the study, says that long-term studies on humans are not available yet, so fasting for 16 hours just for heart health or longevity can be dangerous. That is, people should not follow it continuously for years without complete information.
