News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump's administration is reviewing the billion-dollar defense agreement (AUKUS) signed with Australia and Britain during the tenure of former President Joe Biden. Under this agreement, Australia was allowed to acquire nuclear submarines equipped with conventional weapons.
A review is being conducted under the leadership of the Pentagon
This review being led by the Pentagon could be a cause of concern for Australia as it considers these submarines important for its security in view of the growing military power of China. This review could also hamper Britain's defense plans.
This deal is in line with the America First agenda of the current President
A US defense official said, "We are reviewing AUKUS to ensure that this initiative of the previous administration is consistent with the America First agenda of the current President. Any change in the administration's approach to AUKUS will be communicated through official channels in due course."
This agreement was made in 2021 in view of the increasing power of China
AUKUS was created in 2021 in response to shared concerns about China's growing power. It was designed to allow Australia to acquire attack nuclear submarines and other advanced weapons such as hypersonic missiles.
Among Trump's senior policymakers, the leading figure skeptical of the deal is Albridge Colby, a top policy adviser at the Pentagon. In a 2024 talk with Britain's Policy Exchange think-tank, Colby warned that US military submarines are a rare and critical commodity and that US industry cannot produce enough of them to meet the country's demand. These submarines will be central to US military strategy in any conflict with China.
Only six countries operate nuclear submarines
Colby said, "I am concerned why we are giving these up when we need them the most." It is noteworthy that only six countries operate nuclear submarines, which include America, Britain, Russia, China, France and India.
