News Topical, Digital Desk : Soda, sparkling water, or energy drinks have become a common part of our lifestyles these days. Whether it's the scorching sun or a party with friends, a cold carbonated drink refreshes everyone, but did you know that these drinks could permanently tarnish your beautiful smile?

Direct acid attack

Most carbonated drinks have a very low pH level, which means they are excessively acidic by nature. According to science, when the pH level in our mouth drops below 5.5, the outermost and strongest protective layer of teeth – called enamel – slowly begins to dissolve.

  • Carbonic acid effect:  The bubbles in this drink produce carbonic acid. Although it's mild, it significantly lowers the pH of the mouth.
  • Dangerous Extra Acids: Many soda drinks contain added phosphoric, citric, or malic acid. These acids further erode tooth enamel .

What is the result?

Constant exposure to acid gradually wears down your teeth, leading to sensitivity to hot and cold. Furthermore, when the white enamel wears away, the yellow layer inside your teeth, called dentin, becomes visible, making your teeth appear yellow.

Sugar increases the risk of cavities

If you're drinking sugary carbonated drinks, you're at risk for your teeth. Doctors say the second biggest risk comes from the high sugar content in these drinks.

  • A feast for bacteria: Our mouths are home to many types of bacteria. When we drink sugary soda, these bacteria feed on the sugar and create a new acid, which directly damages the teeth.
  • Cavity Risk: The liquid sugar in soda or energy drinks easily sticks to the surface of teeth. It penetrates deep into the fine spaces between teeth. Remaining there for extended periods, it provides ample opportunity for bacteria to multiply rapidly. This increases the risk of severe tooth decay and cavities significantly.

This information clearly shows that regularly consuming carbonated water and other fizzy drinks is slowly eroding both the strength and health of your teeth, like termites. To maintain your healthy, bright smile for the long term, it's crucial to understand the harm these drinks can cause.
