News Topical, Digital Desk : Anutin Charnvirakul won the election for the post of Prime Minister in Thailand on Friday. Anutin, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, received more than 247 votes out of 492 members of the House of Representatives.

He is expected to take office in a few days after receiving a formal appointment from King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Pheu Thai, who is currently leading a caretaker government, attempted to dissolve parliament on Tuesday, but the king's Privy Council rejected his request.

Anutin Charnvirakul will replace Shinawatra

He will replace Patongtarn Shinawatra, who was forced to step down as prime minister last week following a court order. The dispute escalated into a deadly five-day armed conflict in July. Anutin served in Patongtarn's Cabinet but resigned and pulled his party out of the coalition government after a leaked phone call sparked a public uproar.

Anutin is known for successfully lobbying for the decriminalisation of marijuana. He played a key role as health minister during the COVID-19 pandemic.
