News Topical, Digital Desk : According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck at 21:06:57 IST. Its epicenter was located at 9.44 north latitude and 77.71 east longitude, with a depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more intensely than deep earthquakes because they occur closer to the surface. The intensity and other seismic parameters may change in the coming hours due to processing of seismic data.


A second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) put the quake at a magnitude of 3.0. A third agency, the RaspberryShake network of civilian seismometers, also gave the same quake a magnitude of 3.0.

Towns or cities near the epicenter that may have felt very mild tremors include Sithurajapuram (population 16,900) (9 km from the epicenter), Sivakasi (population 234,700) (10 km), Viswanatham (population 25,600) (10 km), Srivilliputhur (population 75,400) (12 km), Tiruttangal (population 55,400) (14 km), and Rajapalayam (population 130,400) (17 km). Virudhunagar (population 73,300, 32 km), Kovilpatti (population 95,100, 35 km), and Madurai (population 1,465,600, 70 km) likely experienced no tremors.
