He said that the 50 per cent tariff imposed by the US on Indian products is already affecting bilateral trade and if these tariffs are increased further, it will have a serious negative impact on exports from Delhi to Washington.

Demand for a trade deal

S.C. Ralhan, president of the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO), the apex exporters' organization, said that both sides should continue discussions to find a solution. He emphasized that only dialogue can break the current impasse. Meanwhile, a leather exporter said that the United States is a very important market for India, and an early conclusion of a trade agreement could give the country's exports a new impetus. He acknowledged that while Indian companies are exploring new markets, the United States remains a key and strategic market.

Another exporter in the engineering sector also emphasized that an India-US bilateral trade agreement would help reduce trade-related uncertainties and create a better environment for both investment and exports. Meanwhile, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), an economic research institute, said that it would be inaccurate to attribute the India-US trade standoff solely to personal diplomacy.

GTRI founder Ajay Srivastava said the delay stems from difficult policy choices and deep disagreements that the two countries have yet to fully resolve. He warned that ignoring these issues could risk undermining one of the world's most important trading partnerships.
