Summer has begun and  the mercury is rising day by day. Meanwhile, the mercury has crossed 44 degrees in many states of India. Keeping this in mind, IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts for heat wave and has suggested to take precautions. In the coming few days, the heat is going to make people's condition worse, which can be very harmful for health. 

 

Heat wave can cause problems like dehydration, heat stroke, fatigue and dizziness. Therefore, it is important to take some precautions (Heatwave Safety Tips) to keep yourself safe (Heatwave Prevention Measures) during this time.

Drink plenty of water

  • Drink at least 3-4 litres of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Drink coconut water, buttermilk, lemon water and ORS etc., so that there is no deficiency of electrolytes in the body.
  • Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol, as they increase dehydration.

Wear light and cotton clothes

  • Wear light colored loose clothes instead of dark colored clothes.
  • Cotton or linen clothes absorb sweat and keep the body cool.
  • Use a hat, scarf or umbrella to cover your head.

Avoid going out in the sun

  • Stay indoors between 12 noon and 3 pm as the sun rays are strongest during this time.
  • If it is necessary to go out, walk in the shade and go out only after applying sunscreen .

Keep the house cool

  • Keep curtains and windows closed during the day, so that hot air does not come in.
  • Open the windows at night to allow ventilation and prevent you from feeling suffocated due to humidity.
  • Use a cooler, fan or AC. If this is not available, run the fan with a wet cloth.

Eat light and nutritious food

  • Avoid eating fried and spicy food.
  • Include seasonal fruits in your diet, especially watermelon, cucumber, orange and mango panna.
  • Also include curd, buttermilk and salad in your diet.

Do not do much physical activity

  • Don't do intense exercise or strenuous work in the sun.
  • If it is necessary to work, take rest in between and keep drinking water.

Take special care of children and the elderly

  • Children and the elderly are more sensitive to heat waves, so protect them from the sun and advise them to stay indoors.
  • Dress them in light clothes and keep giving them water regularly.

Recognize the symptoms of heat stroke

  • If someone experiences symptoms like high fever, headache, dizziness, vomiting or fainting, then contact the doctor immediately.
