News Topical, Digital Desk : Russia on Monday said the US is pursuing a "neo-colonial" policy against the "Global South" countries to maintain its dominance and expressed its readiness to enhance cooperation with these countries to build a multilateral and egalitarian global order.
This statement by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova came after US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on several countries a few days ago.
What is the meaning of Global South?
It is noteworthy that Global South refers to those countries which are often known as developing and poor countries, these are mainly in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Zakharova said sanctions are a 'sad reality' that affects the whole world. Washington is pursuing a 'neo-colonial policy' to maintain its dominance. It is using economic means of political pressure against those who do not want to follow it at the international level.
America is encroaching on developing countries through tariffs: Russia
Zakharova described Trump's tariff policy against Russia's Global South partners as a "direct encroachment" on these countries' sovereignty and an attempt to interfere in their internal affairs.
"We have many partners, like-minded allies who share this vision in the countries of the Global South," she said. Zakharova referred to the BRICS group, which originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates joined it in 2024, while Indonesia is also joining in 2025. He said, we are ready to enhance cooperation with them to counter illegal unilateral sanctions and build a genuine multilateral, fair and equal world order.
Zakharova also said that the US policy is leading to economic recession, damage to supply chains and losses to the global economy. She said, "Contrary to the fundamental provisions in the field of free trade, which Western countries once promoted, politically motivated protectionism and arbitrary tariff barriers are being erected."
