News Topical, Digital Desk : In Hinduism, the period of Kharmas (Kharmas 2026) often makes people feel a little sad. This is because auspicious events like weddings, tonsure ceremonies, and housewarming ceremonies are put on hold during Kharmas.
But, did you know how spiritually significant what we consider an “empty” month actually is?
What is the real story of Kharmas?
According to astrology, when the Sun enters Jupiter's zodiac sign (Sagittarius or Pisces), its brightness and influence diminish slightly. This is what we call "Kharmas."
According to legend, the Sun God was circling the universe on his chariot drawn by seven horses. His horses grew tired. To quench their thirst, the Sun God led them to a pond, but according to the rules, they were not supposed to stop. Two donkeys were present there.
To give the horses some rest, the Sun God harnessed donkeys to his chariot. As the donkeys slowed down, the Sun's radiance diminished, and this period came to be known as Kharmas.
Why worship Lord Vishnu?
During Kharmas, any worldly auspicious work is prohibited. However, this time is considered a golden period for worshipping Hari, or Lord Vishnu. Furthermore, it is considered as fruitful as the Purushottam month.
What do the scriptures say?
According to Padma Purana , during Kharmas, the person who wakes up before sunrise and meditates on Lord Vishnu and recites 'Purusha Sukta', gets relief from all the troubles of life.
According to the Srimad Bhagavata Purana , this is a time for self-reflection and meditation. Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama during this time is considered infallible for mental peace.
Special Benefits of Worshiping in Kharmas
- Since the Sun and Jupiter are in a special position during this time, worshipping Vishnu calms the Guru Dosha and Surya Dosha in the horoscope
- In this busy life, when external work stops, it is time to clean yourself from within.
- It is believed that the donations (sesame, jaggery and clothes) made during Kharmas yield many times more results than on normal days.
What can you do?
If you want to take full advantage of this month, there's no need for much fanfare. Simply chant the mantra "Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay" every morning after your bath. In the evening, light a ghee lamp near the Tulsi plant and, if possible, recite the Gita.
