A group of students in Bangladesh has announced the formation of a new political party. These students' movement ousted the Sheikh Hasina government from power in August last year. The new Republican Student Parliament or Democratic Student Council includes key organizers of the powerful Students Against Discrimination (SAD) group.

According to the Bangladeshi newspaper Daily Star, the new party has been named 'Jatiya Nagrik Party' (National Citizen's Party) and it will be launched on Friday. Nahid Islam, who was an advisor in the interim government of Mohammad Yunus, has been appointed as the convener of the party and Akhtar Hussain has been appointed as the member secretary.

Additionally, Hasnat Abdullah has been named as the chief organiser (south), while Sarjis Alam has been named the chief organiser of the north zone and Nasiruddin Patwari as the chief coordinator. These decisions were taken during a joint meeting of the Citizens' Committee and Anti-Discrimination Students, held at the Citizens' Committee's central office at Banglamotar in the capital this afternoon.

What did Nahid say about the party?

Nahid Islam was the information advisor in the Yunus government's cabinet but he resigned dramatically on Wednesday. Nahid Islam said in a press conference after his resignation, "Given the current situation in the country, the emergence of a new party has become necessary. I have decided to remain on the streets to strengthen the people's uprising. That's why I resigned from the cabinet."
