Cases of diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure) are increasing rapidly in India. Both these problems not only affect the heart and brain, but also cause serious damage to the kidneys.
Kidney is an important organ of the body, which works to filter the blood and remove toxins. But due to diabetes and hypertension (Diabetes Impact), the functioning of the kidney gradually decreases, which can later lead to kidney disease.
How do diabetes and hypertension damage the kidneys?
Due to increased sugar levels in diabetes, the small blood vessels of the kidney get damaged. This affects the filtration system of the kidney and it is unable to function properly. Similarly, in hypertension, high blood pressure increases the pressure on the blood vessels of the kidney, causing damage to them. If these conditions are not controlled, the risk of kidney disease increases.
Symptoms and tests of kidney disease
The biggest problem with kidney disease is that its symptoms are not clear in the initial stages. By the time the symptoms appear, the functioning of the kidney is affected to a great extent. Therefore, people who have diabetes, hypertension, obesity, heart disease or stroke should get their kidneys checked regularly. Also, those who have a history of kidney disease in their family should also be cautious.
Doctors usually recommend two tests to check the kidneys-
- Urine test- In this, the amount of protein in the urine is checked. The presence of protein in the urine can be a sign of kidney disease.
- Urea Creatinine Test- This test measures the levels of urea and creatinine in the blood. An increased level of these indicates that the kidneys are being damaged.
Ways to keep kidneys healthy
- Regular check-up: If you have diabetes, hypertension or other related diseases, get your kidneys checked at least once a year.
- Balanced diet- Eat less salt, sugar and fat. Include fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your diet.
- Drink plenty of water- Drinking enough water helps the kidneys flush out toxins.
- Physical Activity- Regular exercise helps to control weight and also keeps blood pressure normal.
- Stay away from smoking and alcohol- Smoking and drinking alcohol damages the kidneys . So stay away from these.
