Donald Trump has openly warned global organizations as soon as he became the President. As soon as he assumed the presidency, he first separated from the World Health Organization (WHO). Then he warned the BRICS countries of imposing 100 percent tariff by accusing them of influencing the dollar. After that, he ordered a ban on the ICC (International Criminal Court) saying that the ICC misuses its power. The question arises that what does Trump want to achieve by tightening the noose on the world's institutions?
Donald Trump, who came back to power with the slogan of 'America First', has been taking new decisions with his tough foreign policy. As soon as he came to power, he first talked about amending the citizenship law. He signed a proposal to selectively send illegal immigrants to their countries. This proposal also started getting implemented.
After this, he signed the decision to withdraw himself from WHO. He also separated America from WHO, UNHRC, UNRWA, Paris Climate Agreement. Then he banned ICC. Now he is talking about 'occupation' of Gaza.
- The US bears 22 percent of the regular budget that runs the United Nations.
- The US bears 25 per cent of the total expenditure of the United Nations for peace efforts. China is second in this list.
Why was a ban imposed on ICC?
- Recently, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who was on a US visit, was declared wanted by the International Court. In response to this, Trump ordered a ban on the ICC. Trump had also expressed dissatisfaction over the functioning of the ICC during his previous tenure.
- The US' argument behind the latest ban on ICC is that the action taken by the International Court against Israel is 'baseless'. The Trump administration has said in its directive that the ICC 'used its authority to investigate American employees, Israel and American allies without any valid basis'.
What is the logic behind leaving WHO?
America decided to leave the World Health Organization (WHO) because it believes that WHO was not able to work properly during the Corona period. America also believes that WHO favors China.
- The health organization receives a large amount of money from the US in the form of annual funds i.e. grants. In the year 2022-23, WHO provided aid of $128 crore. The Trump administration argues that WHO does not use the money properly.
- America believes that under the policy of 'America First', Trump wants to gain benefits by using the money given to WHO in his own country.
Why did the US pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement?
- Trump has distanced himself from the Paris Climate Agreement. In fact, Trump has been angry with the Paris Climate Agreement from the very beginning. Trump's argument has been that countries like China and India emit a lot of carbon and the rules of the Paris Climate Agreement have not been successful in stopping them.
- Trump even argued that this agreement has gone in the wrong direction. Therefore, America has no need for such agreements. America has always feared that the Paris Agreement will affect American industries. Jobs will be reduced. Trump has always considered such conditions to be against American interests.
What is the Trump administration's logic behind withdrawing from UNHRC?
Trump recently announced his separation from UNHRC i.e. United Nations Human Rights Council. He also stopped the financial aid given to the Human Rights Council. Amidst the Israel-Hamas war, Trump believes that UNHRC is biased and prejudiced against Israel.
Trump also raised questions on UNESCO and UNRWA
President Trump has also ordered a review of America's role in UNESCO. UNRWA, which works as an institution of the UN, works for Palestinian refugees. Israel has alleged that UNRWA shelters Hamas terrorists. Israeli PM Netanyahu has also accused UNRWA of being biased. After all this, Trump thought it appropriate to separate from UNRWA.
