New Delhi. Heatwave and severe heat have given a double blow to the general public. In this summer season, the prices of vegetables are skyrocketing. In many areas of the country, tomatoes are also becoming expensive along with onions and potatoes. The price of tomatoes has doubled in the last two weeks.

Initially, the price of tomatoes was seen rising in Maharashtra and the southern states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, but now its prices have increased across the country. It is being said that the price of tomatoes may rise further.

what is the price of tomatoes

According to Agmarknet, which is a government portal, the average wholesale price of tomatoes in South India is 35 to 50 rupees per kilogram. At the same time, in some markets of Karnataka, the price of tomatoes has reached 60 rupees per kilogram. If we talk about retail prices, then at many places tomatoes are available at the rate of 80 rupees per kilogram.

According to the data, in the last two-three weeks, the price of tomatoes has doubled compared to last one year. However, the price of tomatoes has not increased so much in North India yet. But, it is believed that the situation may get complicated in July. In fact, whenever there is a decrease in supply, the prices rise.

Why tomatoes are getting expensive

According to experts, tomato production has not increased much this year. Due to the intense heat, the flowers and fruits got spoiled, due to which the production also decreased.

Apart from this, it is believed that the supply of tomatoes in the market is also not much. For the last one year, the price of tomatoes has been skyrocketing between July and October.

Tomatoes are grown in many areas during the rainy season, but sometimes the crop gets spoiled due to excessive rain.
