How did the name Valmiki come into existence?

According to the legend, Valmiki's name was Ratnakar earlier. He was a robber and used to support his family by robbing people who came to the forest. Then once he tried to rob Narad Muni who had come to the forest. But the teachings given by Narad ji changed his heart and he did severe penance to seek forgiveness from his father. He became so engrossed in penance that ants made a nest all over his body, which is why he was called Valmiki.

 

This is how Ramayana was composed

There is a story related to the composition of the epic Ramayana, according to which, Maharishi Valmiki composed the Ramayana at the behest of Lord Brahma. According to the story, Valmiki cursed a hunter who killed a crane, but during this time a shloka was suddenly composed from his mouth.
