In a major move, the Donald Trump administration on Monday warned that people who engage in "hostile activities" against the state could have their visas and green cards revoked.

The announcement came after Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil was detained for his role in anti-Israel protests.

The White House shared a statement from President Trump, saying, "Khalil's arrest is the first of many more to come. We know there are many students at Columbia and other universities across the country who are involved in pro-terrorism, anti-Semitic, anti-American activities. The Trump Administration will not tolerate this."

Are Indian Green Card holders at risk?

According to data from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, Indians are the second-largest group to receive US citizenship or green cards in FY 2024, with 49,700 Indians being granted naturalised citizenship.

However, Trump's threat to revoke green cards is related to US action against Hamas supporters involved in terrorist activities on American soil and does not necessarily affect citizenship and immigration policies.

On what basis can green card holders be deported?

A green card holder can be deported under one of the grounds for deportation in the Immigration and Nationality Act. The person must be convicted of a crime. Also, if a green card holder has provided material support to terrorist organizations, then deportation can be done.
