News Topical, Digital Desk : Iran says a US submarine torpedoed and sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean without warning, killing 87 sailors. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the incident as "atrocity at sea" and said the US would pay a heavy price.

It's worth noting that the frigate IRIS Dena had been returning from India a few weeks ago after participating in naval exercises. "The US committed this atrocity in international waters, 2,000 miles from Iran's borders," Aragchi wrote on X. "The frigate Dena was a guest of the Indian Navy, carrying approximately 130 sailors. It was struck by a torpedo without any warning."

When did the attack happen?

The attack occurred in international waters near Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Navy launched a rescue operation after receiving a distress call. Thirty-two sailors were rescued, and 87 bodies were recovered. Some reports indicate 61 are missing. In total, approximately 180 people were on board.

US Defense Secretary's statement

"An American submarine sank an Iranian warship, which thought it was safe in international waters, in a 'silent death' by torpedo," US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said at a Pentagon briefing, calling it the first time the US had torpedoed an enemy ship since World War II.

The Pentagon released video of the attack, showing the torpedoes that blew off the ship's stern, lifting it above the water and causing it to begin sinking from the stern. Hegseth said the US was fighting to win the war.
