Meanwhile, the UN said that more than 1 million people have been affected by Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean region.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Friday that nearly 40,000 people had been affected in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, more than 110,000 in Grenada and 920,000 in Jamaica.
11 people lost their lives
Category 4 Hurricane Beryl has killed at least 11 people so far. It caused massive destruction in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday. On Wednesday, life in Jamaica also came to a standstill. According to news agency Xinhua, the storm is currently affecting Belize and Mexico.
In Grenada, the hurricane caused heavy damage on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, where 70 percent and 97 percent of buildings were damaged, respectively, the International Organization for Migration reported. In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, 90 percent of homes on Union Island were affected, while almost all buildings on Canouan Island were damaged.
Teams deployed, $4 million in aid
OCHA said it has deployed teams to Caribbean countries to support their response efforts and that $4 million has been made available from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund to launch humanitarian operations in Grenada, Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
OCHA further stated that 'We will continue to work closely with and support the authorities, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Agency and our partners to assess and respond to the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl.'
