The Supreme Court on Monday directed all state governments and Union Territories to implement Section 136A of the Motor Vehicles Act, which provides for electronic monitoring of speeding vehicles. The court said it is aimed at enhancing road safety on highways and urban roads.

A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih asked Delhi, Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala to inform the court by December 6 about the steps taken to comply with Section 136A read with Rule 167A of the Motor Vehicles Act.

 

Fine will be imposed on the basis of footage from electronic devices

It said that after deciding on the use of electronic devices for issuing challans, the state governments and Union Territories shall ensure that the fines for violation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act are imposed on the basis of footage from electronic devices.

 

Including cities with a population of more than one million

State governments have to ensure that electronic devices are installed at high risk and densely populated areas and important intersections on national and state highways. This should also include major cities having a population of at least one million.
