America's newly elected President Donald Trump had threatened Hamas that if the hostages were not released before his swearing-in, he would open the doors of hell in the Middle East. Now the effect of this threat is also visible.
Under the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Qatar, Hamas has agreed to release 33 hostages in the first phase. However, many of these hostages may be dead. It is being told that the talks between the two sides are in the final stage.
94 hostages still in custody
Israel had claimed that Hamas had 94 hostages in its custody after the attack on 7 October 2023. About 34 of them have died. Talks are going on between the two countries in Doha, Qatar.
Donald Trump said on Monday that he was confident that a ceasefire deal would be reached before his swearing-in on Monday.
Biden also expressed happiness
President Joe Biden has also expressed happiness over the deal. He said, 'The agreement we have prepared will lead to the release of hostages. This deal will end the fighting. Our agreement will provide security to Israel. We will also be able to provide humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.'
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also said that the agreement is in the final stages. He said that pressure is mounting on Hamas to agree to the agreement.
Dispute over buffer zone too
- It is expected that an agreement will be reached after the last round of talks on Tuesday. Hamas will release 33 hostages in the first phase, while the second phase will be about ending the war. However, the Israeli army will remain present on the Philadelphi corridor.
- There is also a dispute over a buffer zone inside Gaza. Hamas wants to return to the situation before 7 October, in which the buffer zone would be 300-500 meters from the border. But Israel demands that the buffer zone should be up to 2000 meters.
