New Delhi . The deadline to apply for the post of head coach of the Indian men's cricket team ended on Monday, but the BCCI and Gautam Gambhir, the strongest contender for the post, have maintained silence on this. Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title, seems to be a strong contender.

Both the parties have not said anything about this, but it seems that the BCCI does not have a very strong option. It is understood that no big foreign name has applied for the post and Board Secretary Jay Shah has already said that he is looking for a candidate who understands Indian cricket.

The BCCI had its eyes on National Cricket Academy head VVS Laxman but the stylish former Hyderabad cricketer does not seem to be interested in the full-time position.

A source in the board said, "The deadline is fine, but the board can take some more time before taking a decision. At present the team is busy preparing for the T20 World Cup. After this, senior players will be given rest on the tour of Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe and a senior coach from the NCA can go with the team. So what is the hurry?"

KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan has a very close relationship with Gambhir, so it will not be easy for him to leave the IPL team.
