Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in an Israeli army operation, was born in 1962 in Gaza's Khan Younis refugee camp. He was involved in the movement for establishing an independent Palestine since childhood and was known as the Butcher of Khan Younis due to his extremely violent attitude towards Israeli citizens.

Sinwar developed brain cancer in Israeli captivity

When Israel arrested him sometime before 1990, he admitted during interrogation that he was responsible for the murder of 12 Israeli civilians. He was later sentenced to four life sentences for the murder of two Israeli soldiers. Sinwar developed brain cancer in 2008 while in Israeli custody but recovered with treatment.

In 2016, Sinwar became the biggest Hamas leader in Gaza

Meanwhile, an Israeli soldier was taken hostage by Hamas fighters and in exchange for his release in 2011, Israel had to release Yahya Sinwar and 999 other prisoners. Sinwar was welcomed like a hero when he was released and reached Gaza and after that his stature in the organization kept increasing. He started working as the head of Hamas's military wing. After this, sidelining his rivals, Sinwar became the biggest leader of Hamas in Gaza in 2016.

It is believed that after that a network of long and complex tunnels was laid in Gaza. Living in these tunnels, Sinwar was escaping Israeli attacks for more than a year. During this time, the Israeli army and intelligence agencies were unable to find him even after many efforts.

Trained hundreds of Hamas fighters

It is said that Sinwar had been planning a major attack on Israel for many years. For this, he made Muhammad Daif the head of Hamas' military wing and trained hundreds of Hamas fighters. Later, these fighters wreaked havoc on Israel on the morning of October 7, 2023 and wrote the story of the bloodiest day in Israel's history.

Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar was killed in Thursday's Israeli army action in Gaza. The Israeli army has officially confirmed this. The Israeli army posted on X and wrote, 'Yahya Sinwar is dead.' It is worth noting that earlier the Israeli army had expressed the possibility of his death, but was not able to say anything concrete. After this, a DNA test was conducted to correctly identify the body of a person who looked like Sinwar. US President Joe Biden was also informed about this.
