
Recently, a rise in the number of asylum seekers trying to enter the continent through southern Mediterranean countries has put the European Union in a refugee crisis. EU leaders are now convening emergency meetings to take into account a variety of possible solutions, including tightening border controls and revising their migration policy. Arrivals bearing the brunt of the operation, such as in Italy and Greece, are demanding refugee distribution across the EU is more equal. International law concerns have been raised by some human rights groups, while other political factions insist stricter controls are needed to ensure national security. Both humanitarian obligations and national security concerns have been on fire during the crisis.
