Worshipping the Shivling is one of the most powerful ways to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings. However, according to Hindu scriptures, there are certain rules and restrictions that must be followed during Shivling puja. If these mistakes are made, devotees may not receive full benefits of their prayers.

Let’s explore the things that should never be offered to the Shivling and the correct way to perform the puja.

Things to Avoid in Shivling Puja

1. Do Not Offer Tulsi Leaves

  • Tulsi is dear to Lord Vishnu, but it is forbidden in Shiva Puja.
  • Instead, use Bel Patra (Bilva leaves), which are considered sacred for Lord Shiva.

2. Avoid Coconut Water on the Shivling

  • While coconut is offered in many Hindu rituals, pouring coconut water on the Shivling is not allowed.
  • Instead, offer plain water or milk as it is considered more appropriate.

3. Never Offer Kumkum or Sindoor

  • Red-colored items like kumkum and sindoor are associated with Goddess Parvati, not Lord Shiva.
  • Instead, use Bhasma (sacred ash) or sandalwood paste.

4. Do Not Use Broken Rice

  • Only whole, unbroken rice grains should be offered, as broken rice is considered inauspicious.
  • White rice symbolizes purity and devotion, making it suitable for Shiva puja.

5. Avoid Offering Conch Water (Shankh Jal)

  • Water from a conch (Shankh) is used in Vishnu Puja but is strictly forbidden in Shiva Puja.
  • Instead, use Ganga Jal, milk, or honey for abhishek.
