New Delhi. The central government has proposed amendment in the Legal Metrology Rules-2011 related to packaged goods. Under this, it is proposed to make it mandatory to declare important information related to packaged goods weighing more than 25 kg or having quantity more than 25 liters for retail sale. In the interest of consumers, it will be mandatory to provide details like name and address of manufacturer, packer, importer, country of origin, name of the product, quantity, month and year of manufacture, MRP, pack selling price, best use date etc. on all packaged goods.

It will be mandatory for both offline and online platforms. The proposed amendment aims to remove the shortcomings under which there is exemption for not providing information about maximum retail price (MRP), expiry date and manufacturing company on bulk packing. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has sought suggestions and objections from the general public on the related proposal till July 29. If the new rule is implemented, then packaged goods for industrial or institutional consumers will be kept out of its scope.

The ministry said on Sunday that packaged items weighing more than 25 kg are also available for retail sale in the market. After the amendment in the rules, comprehensive labeling will be mandatory on all pre-packaged items for retail sale. Whatever the quantity of packaged items. The new rule will bring transparency in the industry and help consumers to choose the right option.
