Justin Trudeau, Canada's 23rd Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party for more than a decade, has announced his resignation. At a packed press conference in Ottawa after nearly nine years in office, the 53-year-old leader spoke about his achievements, challenges and a unique regret.

Justin Trudeau said during the press conference that he had to step down before the general elections to be held in the country this year. Because of this, he regretted one thing.

The country must get a right choice in the next election

Trudeau made his statement during a press conference.

If I regret anything, especially as we approach this election, it is that I wish we could change the way we choose our governments in this country so that people can choose their second or third choice on the same ballot paper. He said he wants a change in the election process. Trudeau further said, the country must get a real choice in the next election.

Why did Trudeau back down?

  • When he led the Liberals to their first victory in 2015, Trudeau was described as carrying the torch of a progressive.
  • Trudeau made several promises, advocating for issues such as climate action and gender equality.
  • Facing criticism on a number of issues, including rising living costs and growing discontent within his own party, Trudeau opted to withdraw rather than face a difficult election campaign.

What kind of voting system did Trudeau want?

Trudeau wanted the country to vote according to a ranking system. According to his plan, if no candidate gets a majority after counting the votes, then the candidate who has been chosen as the lowest option by the voters would be removed from the election race, and his ballots would be transferred to the second-placed candidate. This process would continue until one candidate wins with 50 percent plus one votes.
